Rock Thurrock 1st April 2011 – Ignite the Flame

1st April 2011 saw the first half night of prayer and worship in the run up to the Rock Thurrock event in September and I was privileged to be asked to lead the worship and soaking for the event.

Well I spent time as one does in preparation for such an event (and there hasn’t been one that was the first challenge). Just not knowing really how it would go or how many people would turn up; selecting sufficient songs of the right sort that would convey the right feeling was a little daunting to say the least. but with God on my side what could go wrong? Well not much actually, a slight stumble with the bass amp, quickly rectified and we were good to go.

Anyway, as a little techie side note, using the iPad with the OnSong App was fantastic, no pieces of paper, no folders, the entire set list at my fingertips. Then being able to send the list with chord charts, to the Gary, the keyboard player’s iPad and OnSong app as well as the Laura’s (the wife) iPad too so she could turn off the chords and just have the words. I also have the iKlip adapter which just makes using the iPad as a music stand absolutely spot on.

Back to igniting the flame…..

I had the rough programme from the core team and based the worship on 3 or 4 sections…

Section 1 was praise based, joyous songs finishing with Hosanna (from Hillsongs) and You’re the God of this city.

Sections 2 and 3 were more worshipful songs to be played during the prayer times with one or to songs where the congregation joined in notably More Love, More Power and I see the Lord.

Section 4 was more exhortation songs ending with How Great is our God (well we should have ended there but we did another song, which is a fantastic song with great words, Or God is Greater, but I set it too fast and it flopped a little).

All in all it was a fantastic time and an amazing opportunity to pray and worship God. There were around 60 – 80 people there which is great, but considering how many churches are in Thurrock, we should have seen at least twice that many….

Well these are just my own thoughts on the evening and I’m looking forward to the next.
