Mathew 6 v 5 –
Mat 6:5 "When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites! They love to stand up and pray in the houses of worship and on the street corners, so that everyone will see them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.
Mat 6:6 But when you pray, go to your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.
Mat 6:7 "When you pray, do not use a lot of meaningless words, as the pagans do, who think that their gods will hear them because their prayers are long.
Mat 6:8 Do not be like them. Your Father already knows what you need before you ask him.
Mat 6:9 This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven: May your holy name be honoured;
Mat 6:10 may your Kingdom come; may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Mat 6:11 Give us today the food we need.
Mat 6:12 Forgive us the wrongs we have done, as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us.
Mat 6:13 Do not bring us to hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One.’
Mat 6:14 "If you forgive others the wrongs they have done to you, your Father in heaven will also forgive you.
Mat 6:15 But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive the wrongs you have done.
Mat 6:16 "And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.
Mat 6:17 When you go without food, wash your face and comb your hair,
Mat 6:18 so that others cannot know that you are fasting—only your Father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.
Sermon on the mount. Jesus teaching the disciples lessons on how NOT to pray and HOW to pray
Jesus is saying, you start to pray “My Father….” its a personal relationship. Not everyone can call God “My Father” and only those who are born of the spirit can call God “My Father”.
The bible makes a distinction between children of wroth and children of spirit.
Before the act of grace [Jesus dying on the cross] we were children of wroth.
Do not challenge people about sin, about eternal destination.
Spirit of adoption from which we cry out “Abba Father” God adopted us by Jesus dying.
We are loved by God through all of the sin so that we can say “MY FATHER”.. “I Love you!!!!”"
Jesus says “My Father, In heaven…” This father [God] is different to “earthly” fathers who will go a long way to show his love.
In the midst of a fatherless generation we have something to share to the world…. “Our Father is a wonderful father”.
Jesus corrects the wrong models of fathers by showing us the perfect father – God.
Then Jesus says “Hallowed thy name”"
Hallowed means to sanctify, to revere, to make holy. “Thy Name” should be in capitals as it is represents God.
God gave himself names in the bible – the El… the Jehovah… etc
Jesus is saying we want the name of God to be honoured and revered.
The honour of a name in eastern cultures is very important, The honour of the name of our God is very important and Jesus said when we pray that should be our focus.
Is God honoured and revered through me? When people see me do they see how we revere our Father or do they see another hypocrite
Our Fathers name is above ALL names.
When we approached God we need to approach him with fear and reverence. Why – Because He is a consuming fire worthy of honour.
“thy kingdom come, thy will be done, as it is in heaven”
Why do we have to pray like this? Because we live in a world full of sin. Not all men bow down to God
There are two kingdoms: Gods Kingdom and the kingdom of darkness.
The kingdom of darkness opposed EVERY aspect of the Kingdom of God.
John the Baptist said “repent and be baptised for the Kingdom of God is here”
The Kingdom of God is in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. We want this kingdom to reach out and spread to the world.
“Your Kingdom come” – evangelistic
Another way we pray…
We know that one day Christ will come again, what a day that will be….!!!!!
All evil will cease… God will establish his glory and Kingdom for ever and ever and ever….
